Natural Calamities

Being a disaster-prone country, India is highly vulnerable to various types of natural calamities due to its geographical positioning. According to the National Disaster Management Authority, Govt. of India, more than 58.6% of the country's landmass is prone to earthquakes and over 12% is prone to floods; close to 5,700kms out of the 7,516kms long coastline is prone to cyclones and tsunamis; while 68% of its cultivable area is prone to droughts which is why disaster preparedness is of outmost importance.

Chaitanya Social Welfare Foundation, with its welfare interventions focused on children and their families, responds to the call of humanity in times of such calamities under its Disaster Response programme through emergency relief programs. From Maharashtra floods in 2019, CSWF has acted promptly to reach out and respond to the immediate needs of the disaster affected people, while also maintaining a sustainable approach to help them rebuild their lives by facilitating their education, healthcare and livelihood.

Some of the calamities during which CSWF has initiated crisis management during disaster are the Maharashtra floods, Covid 19, Nisarga Cyclone.

The Maharashtra floods of 2019, caused by torrential rainfall, claimed over 5000 lives, as many more lost their homes, their livelihood and families. The entire nation joined hands in prayer and service to help the affected people during the catastrophe which most severely impacted the regions of Sangli & Kolhapur.

Chaitanya Social Welfare Foundation joined in the efforts by supporting one of the most vulnerable sections of society during such calamities – the underprivileged children. These children often live on the streets or temporary settlements, surrounded by poverty and diseases and are highly susceptible even in their lives, not to talk of a disaster.

CSWF identified a village based in Sangli, named Bhuvaneshwar Wadi, which was badly affected in the flood. We arranged groceries, medicines, Sanitary Napkins etc. for the community who lost their everything in this flood. Along with that we arranged a school kit for children from the community who had lost their books, stationary, uniforms, notebooks and bags in the floods.

Everybody, especially daily workers, migrants suffer from the nationwide Covid pandemic. INDIA is dealing with a dual crisis as it fights corona and imposes a lockdown. As per official records, there are 42 crore or 420 million people who work in the informal sector as daily wage earners, street vendors, farm labourers, etc. A majority of them were already living a hand-to-mouth existence and are now suffering even more without livelihoods. With no money coming in, they are scrounging to feed themselves and their families.

Chaitanya Social Welfare Foundation provided groceries to 82 families of migrant labourers for their daily meals. Along with that, we provided help to Shantivan, beed. We know that Worli was badly affected by Covid infection. At that time we provided groceries to 75 families (labourers) located in Worli Koliwada.

In the Difficult situation “Fight Against Virus”, Maharashtra was badly affected by another cirses. It was Cyclone Nisarga. Which destroyed Alibagh, Shrivardhan & many coastal regions of Maharashtra.

We reached the village named Dharavli, located in Shrivardhan area. It was one of the badly affected villages by the Nisarga Cyclone. Initially we provided required groceries to needy families along with candles, clothes and sanitary napkins to women. Because of the cyclone impact, electricity poles were uprooted. Due to lack of electricity, many women had to fetch water from the hills. To solve this problem, with the help of villagers, We built a pipeline to bring water from the well. For that we arranged DG sets for them.

Numerous parts of Maharashtra have been submerged in the recent floods. Families have been separated, many have been physically hurt and the situation is getting grimmer, and Chiplun called for immediate attention.

Our relief work is done in various parts of Chiplun of Ratnagiri districts by supporting them with Medical, Hygiene and livelihood essentials. Chiplun has been the most affected block in Ratnagiri district.

With collective effort, we have been able to reach 200+ families in Chiplun block.
